The Skyward Flight novellas aren't optional side stories: Sanderson's intended sequence interleaves them with the novels — Sunreach and ReDawn after Starsight, Evershore after Cytonic — because they follow the rest of the flight while Spensa is away, and Defiant picks up threads from all three. Blightfall then opens Riftwake, the sequel trilogy that puts Skyward Flight at the centre.
